The song is said to be originally written by Jimmy Wilson, the upright bass player for Pee Wee King’s Golden West Cowboys. A favorite song of her father’s, Patti Page recorded it and in 1950, the song ran for 30 weeks with as #1 in the Billboard pop music chart. Over the decades Tennessee Waltz has been covered by artists such as Otis Redding, James Brown, Norah Jones, Leonard Cohen, Holly Cole and anne Murray.

You’re Still the One is a song written by Canadian singer Shania Twain and her ex-husband Mutt Lange. It was the first country single from Shania’s 1997 album Come On Over to be released to pop and international markets. The song won two Grammys in 1999 for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Country Roads
Considered John Denver’s most popular and beloved song world-wide, Take Me Home Country Roads was written by Denver, Taffy Nivert and Bill Danoff in 1970. The song has become an iconic symbol of West Virginia. For example it is the theme song and regularly performed at home football games at the West Virginia University, and was played at the funeral memorial for Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) in 2010.

Although this song is mostly associated with Willie Nelson, Always on Mind was written by Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson. Covered by many artists, including Brenda Lee, Elvis Presley and John Wesley Ryles, it was Willie Nelson’s version released in 1982 that picked up both the Grammy and Country Music Awards’ Song of the Year.

Ashokan Farewell
Composed in 1982 by Jay Ungar, Ashokan farewell is written in the style of a Scottis lament and was recorded by the band Fiddle Fever (Ungar and his wife Molly Mason). It served as a goodnight waltz at the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camps that Ungar and Mason run at the Ashokan Field Campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The song has been used in two films by Ken Burns: The Civil War and Huey Long.

Crazy
Written by Willie Nelson, this jazz pop ballad with country overtones was recorded by Patsy Cline and became her signature song and the #2 country hit in 1962. Because of the genre blending nature of the song, Crazy has been covered my many artists over the years, including Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Julio Iglesias, LeAnn Rime and the English alternative band, Apartment. Willie Nelson has recorded a trio version of Crazy with Elvis Costello and Dianna Krall.

Peace in the Valley was written for Mahalia Jackson by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1937. The song became a hit in 1951 for Red Foley and the Sunshine Boys. It was the first gospel recording to sell one million copies. This version also made entry into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

You Are My Sunshine
You Are My Sunshine has been recorded hundreds of times and is both a country and jazz standard. First recorded in 1939, it is Louisiana’s state song associated with former state governor Jimmie Davis. While running for governor, Davis sang it at his campaign rallies and while riding a horse named “Sunshine”.
