Comprehensive & Integrated Hospice Palliative Care Services: Will Canada Meet the Challenge?
Sharon Baxter, MSW (Public Policy and Administration), Executive Director Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association
There is nothing more certain than that we will all die; the variable is when, where, and how. Obviously we wish everyone a long, productive and meaningful life. Yet, when the time comes for us to consider how we would like to live at the end of our lives, we all hope it will be with the appropriate and compassionate care, treatment and support. Quality hospice palliative care can provide the necessary support for you and your family at that challenging time. The hospice palliative team is made up of doctors, nurses, social workers, pastoral care providers, occupational and music therapists, volunteers and many others. Together, they provide care to meet your physical, psychological, social, spiritual, loss, grief and bereavement needs.

Concepts For Compassionate Care: Ideas For Healing
Alleviation of Suffering: The Cornerstone of Spiritual Care
Rev. Elaine MacInnis, BA, MDiv, DMin (Can.)
© 2007 Rev. Elaine MacInnis All rights reserved. Why is it that suffering and its alleviation, which is a major focus of health care, are seldom spoken about in health care settings? Health care professionals may not recognize spiritual issues inherent in their suffering, nor do many believe it is their responsibility to address spiritual issues, and may not know appropriate ways to respond to their patients spiritual needs. The case study of a patient with ovarian cancer and strong religious beliefs experiencing uncontrollable pain is used to explore how a better understanding of the concept of “total pain” and more explicitly spiritual pain might have provided opportunities for improved patient care.

Caregiving: Our Greatest Gift
Part 2 - Self Care for the Professional Palliative Caregiver: “How Can You Do That Job?”
Margaret Van Dyck, RN, BScN, CHPCN
“How can you do that job? It must be depressing to work with people that are dying. How do you cope with that?” For those working in palliative care, these are frequently encountered comments that encourage us to reflect and respond. Palliative care has challenges and rewards stemming from its philosophy of whole person care (body, mind and spirit), within the context of
relationships (psychosocial, spiritual), and involving the caregiver’s whole person. The rewards are significant because of the depth of relationship possible, and the satisfaction which derives from reaching the goal of good quality of life by achieving pain and symptom management. Within the context of a well-functioning supportive team, palliative care can be the most rewarding work.

Music Note
Music Note tells the story behind the songs on Room217. Teddy Bear © Strongheart Inc. – Words & Music by Bev and Rob Foster (Hugs & Kisses) Teddy Bear was especially written for the newly released Room 217 Hugs & Kisses album. The teddy bear, which in fact is represented on the album cover, is personified with feelings and tears. The song is a tender conversation with teddy in which the bear is given permission to cry and express his feelings of fear and sadness.

The effects of good music are not just because it’s new; on the contrary music strikes us more the more familiar we are with it. (Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe) After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. (Aldous Huxley, 1931)
